Introduction Cost to make 500ml spray bottle with one tablet €.44 cent per 500ml bottle at 1000 PPM. At a time when health concerns within care and residential homes have never been higher, it’s essential to choose and correctly utilise a high quality, non-toxic disinfectant and cleaner. There are some additional concerns over the effectiveness of the disinfectants currently used to deal with emerging microbes in care and residential homes, such as coronavirus, C.difficile spores and MRSA. Chlorine and quaternary ammonium compounds (QAC)-based products are commonly used to disinfect surfaces in care and residential homes. However, the use of chlorine results in the formation of toxic, halogenated by-products upon contact with organic material, which is damaging to the user, the environment, and any soft furnishings it comes into contact with. QACs have notoriously poor virucidal, sporicidal, and fungicidal properties at concentrations safe to the user. It also performs very poorly in soiled conditions. Peracide works at lower concentrations than chlorine or ammonia based cleaners and is less hazardous for those using it as a result. Peracetic acid (PAA) produces safe by-products, acetic acid and oxygen, in decomposition and does not therefore leave behind toxic residues that will affect the final product or the waste management of such products. It has proved advantageous as a disinfectant and sanitiser in the residential care industry, with it proven to be highly effective against bacteria; including the likes of MRSA and spore forming bacteria, such as C. difficile, along with producing outstanding efficacies against viruses, such as polio.

Peracide is an in-situ formulated tablet that consists of two precursors (hydrogen peroxide and acetic acid) that react to produce peracetic acid. Peracetic acid is a highly effective broad-spectrum biocide that has been used since the 1950s as a pre-formed liquid at either 5% or 30%. Pre-formed peracetic acid at 5-30% is corrosive, highly flammable and unstable. It is also difficult and to handle and costly transport. Peracide in-situ tablet formulation is able to prevent the solution from being flammable and corrosive and adding co-actives to the mix can enhance the stability, efficacy, pH of the product.

Whereas many disinfection products on the market are sachets that dissolve in water or concentrated liquids that are poured into water prior to cleaning, Peracide is supplied as a soluble tablet, which allows the user to simply measure the correct amount of water and then add the correct number of tablets into the water. Peracide’s integrated colour indicator system provides clear direction to the user on how to use the product, as it will tell the user when the solution has lost its efficacy.
Evidence has shown that with the use of an effective disinfectant system that cross infection and outbreaks can be reduced as much as 70%, as well as reducing the cost of using hydrogen peroxide vaporisers or UVCs.
