Being aware of Leptospirosis and Weil’s disease, and understanding the potential consequences, encourages employees at higher risk to take simple precautions, helping to improve workplace hygiene and avoid the associated health problems.

Arco Safe Hands Wipes are effective against Weil's disease so are a convenient way for employees to disinfect their hands , particularly when working out in the field.

What is Leptospirosis and Weil’s disease?

Leptospirosis isn’t very common in the UK,* but can develop into Weil’s disease a more severe form which is debilitating or even fatal (10% of cases), so preventative measures should be taken by at risk groups to decrease the possibility of contracting it.

How do you catch Leptospirosis and Weil’s disease?

The leptospira bacterium which causes Leptospirosis and Weil’s disease is present in animal urine, particularly rodents, so will be present in their surroundings. Nearby water and damp material (such as soil, vegetation) are all potentially contaminated.

The bacteria can get into your body by swallowing contaminated water or absorbing it through the eyes, nose, mouth or cuts/scratches either directly or indirectly by touch after contact with water or anything else contaminated. The Hardjo form of Leptospirosis is transmitted from cattle to humans.

Who is at risk of contracting Leptospirosis?

Employees who work in an environment where there may be rat populations, including near water, flood zones, wasteland, sewage, agricultural areas or construction or waste disposal sites can be vulnerable. Those who are in close contact with animals, such as farm, veterinary and pest control workers are obviously also at risk of contracting Leptospirosis.

Professionals who participate in leisure activities near water are also at risk, for example the high profile case of double Olympic champion rower Andy Holmes who died from the condition in 2010.

Reporting Leptospirosis

Employers need to report any cases of Leptospirosis contracted at work to the HSE in accordance with the Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations (RIDDOR) 1995 or 1997 (Northern Ireland)/The Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 2002 (COSHH).

Recovery

Patients with mild infections generally recover after a few weeks, but can suffer from fatigue and depression whilst the body continues to heal. Psychological changes (mood swings, depression, psychoses) are common for a few months following recovery.

Long-term effects can also run for years, and severe illness may cause permanent organ damage that never completely heals.

Arco Safe Hands Wipes kill leptospira bacteria

Arco Safe Hands wipes are specially formulated to kill leptospira bacteria, so are a convenient way for employees to disinfect their hands. We suggest employees:

• Rub their hands using the wipe to physically remove dirt which may harbour bacteria.

• Wipe hands before eating, drinking, smoking, or using a phone.

• Practice good hygiene, and be conscious not to inadvertently touch their nose, mouth or rub their eyes without first using a wipe.

• Wipe hands as soon as possible after handling contaminated clothing.

• Cover any cuts with a waterproof dressing.

Of course each situation should be assessed individually and some professions (for example, water utility engineers, research workers and commercial divers) will be more at risk so a thorough risk assessment and stringent precautions may be necessary.
